The 34 mm slot accepts only 34 mm cards. The 54 mm slot accepts both 34 mm and 54 mm cards. A diagonal guide in the rear of the 54 mm slot guides 34 mm cards to the connector. Adapters are available for connecting an ExpressCard/34 card to a CardBus (but not 16-bit PC Card) slot via internal USB 2.0 bus only (not PCI Express).

WD launches two new portable SSDs designed for photographers and drone users: Digital Photography Review In addition to revealingWestern Digital has launched two new portable SSDs specifically designed for "avid photographers and drone enthusiasts" at this year's Consumer Electronics Show CES in Las Vegas.
The offers both high performance and durability in an extremely portable package, while the gives photographers a solid state version of WD's popular My Wireless Pro, which features built-in WiFi, an SD card slot, and other convenient features for photographers on-the-go.
Thanks to the housing, the drive can withstand operating temperatures ranging from 0°C to 45°C 32°F to 113°Fas well as storage temperatures ranging from -20°C to 70°C -4°F to 158°F.
The Extreme Portable SSD drive has a USB 3.
Housed in an enclosure with an integrated 802.
The wireless feature works with the My Cloud mobile app, as well as some third-party apps including LumaFusion and FiLMiC Pro.
For other types of media cards, the Wireless SSD supports direct transfers via a cable and connected media card adapter.
Finally, the drive also features a USB port for transferring content to a computer via USB 3.
Because this model has built-in wireless, Western Digital has packed a 6700mAh battery into the drive case, enabling the WiFi feature to be used for up to 10 hours before it needs to be recharged.
And for convenience' sake, the device's built-in battery doubles as a power bank for charging other USB devices, such as a smartphone.
This new device with SSD, along with RAW preview, Wi-Fi, etc.
As an amateur, I shoot RAW for landscapes, wildlife, sometimes time-lapse, and practically no video.
The reason for CF card is that I shoot with Canon 5D Mark III which does not support UHS when using SD cards.
I bought a Lexar 512GB drive with a USB-C cable USB-A on the computer side to take along for my two month vacation.
Each night I copied over that days images the camera uses the date for folders on the SD card.
Probably not as you described.
As I recall from using the previous non-SSD version, once you plug the drive into a computer via USB it basically switches into standard hard drive mode.
However, you should be able to connect from two notebooks over Wi-Fi at the same time.
No, you cannot have a wired and wireless connection at the same time.
You can have two wireless connections at the same time.
When you connect via a wire the wireless is automatically disabled.
Same problem with printers.
Just can't understand why printers can't auto-detect USB, Ethernet or WiFi and do one wired and WiFi simultaneously; really, just near time without having to re-set the driver.
Does it have USB 3.
Unless you are taking 4K high bitrate video it will take a week to fill that thing up.
Pro drones use an SSD already and pro cameras have 2 card slots for redundancy.
I'm sure I would use it if someone gave it to me but it costs as much as a second-hand surface pro 3 or a macbook.
Being a photographer, I already have a bunch of portable 2TB mechanical drives that I could plug into the surface and backup.
I would also get a Surface pro out of that purchase which I could use to edit the photos and use to tether + all of the wifi stuff this thing has.
IF I filed up my SD cards and had to remove them and back them up I would have to drop the mechanical drive while it was spinning AND lose both cards to lose the pictures.
It seems like an unlikely scenario.
The only thing left is weight.
This thing has a 6700mah battery in it so it's not exactly going to be small.
For many photographers a 512GB SD card is not a viable solution.
I work on assignment for various organizations and I dont put all my eggs in one basket.
I card slot ssd never use a 512GB card for risk of losing a weeks worth of work.
I frequently use smaller cards nothing larger than 64GB and backup to three devices I carry with me, a 512GB iPad Pro, a 3TB Western Digital My Paasport Wireless Pro and the 512GB WD My Passport Wireless SSD.
They travel with me separately and I have redundancy that fits my needs.
Traveling with 5 or 6 512GB SD cards would be costly.
I might also lose one or more.
The smaller they are, the harder they are to manage and I would still want a backup in case of a corrupt, damaged or lost card.
I used to have an x's drive pro back in the day, with an ~80GB hdd in it.
Trouble is, I was always worried the files may have corrupted on the way across, so it gave a horrible feeling to delete the memory card, even though it was essential as my highest capacity card was 1GB.
With dual slot and multiple cards of 128GB readily available, which you can put back in the camera and check what you've got.
Still for use with a laptop while you're on location, I suppose you can carry this on the plane with you and feel its there in your jacket pocket!
Even should I buy it i'd feel it's already very old!
Tb would make sens, not 250 and 500.
I bet overall more beneficial, sell more.
I'll continue ranting if someone says "it would be too big, to unreliable, to costly.
A 1TB SS is still very very expensive.
And, who is sitting onmultiple expensive SSds to put in here?
I also bought a "media hub" device you can attach an external drive to that kind of does the same thing, but not automatically or with indicators like the WD drive has, and is also vastly slower to copy SD cards.
My other quibble with the WD Wireless Pro is that it's really, really slow when connected to a computer - so slow I'm not sure I can really use it for not adapter card slot question else other than backing up SD cards when traveling.
Your suggestions are all great.
After I get done with a trip I'm taking, may try stuffing a faster drive inside and see if it still works.
This is what wedding photographers requires, not a dual slot.
Shoot while, swap card to new in body, move card from SSD on belt to pocket and insert card from camera to SSD on belt and start backup.
You have now a real backup with you.
Cards as the SSD and anything can happen to camera.
The card is tiny, but not as small as SD card, but smaller than DUAL SD card slot.
It is on the right one.
Now, who say that 250 or 500GB extremely fast card wouldn't be nice?
Those cards requires a ultra fast PCI-E bus straight to the powerful CPU and RAM.
Something that embedded systems in cameras ain't capable!
I have to search the house for my phone on a daily basis ever since I don't have a wire connected phone anymore, so I know what would happen if I would use this device like the charming ladies in this film do.
One question, how come these backpackers are so clean?
This is nothing like a real hiking experience!
Correct - This is so fake that it all does look too good to be true.
The fact is that due to fact that this is advert so utterly overdone it just can't convince me.
It's no different than your favorite action movie where in every scene, everyone is so clean, it break the entire look and feel.
Points for using two women models, but would anyone who was actually backpacking and tent camping want to carry a laptop and peripherals?
Seems counter to the idea of getting back to nature.
Plus, if you are still connected to the web on a cell network you are not yet far enough into the outdoors.
So near and yet so far.
This is an expensive premium bit of kit.
Fast SSD with plenty of card slot ssd to choose from, USB 3.
Decently fast SD card reader.
Fast, up to date wifi.
On-board power for off grid use.
So far, what some of us wanted and were prepared to pay for.
So why oh why is the import USB socket for plugging a card reader in USB 2.
Anyone using CFast, XQD cards or, indeed, SDXC UHSII has just been crippled for their backups through a card reader.
If it had a USB 3.
But as it is, it does not offer me the package I was waiting for so I will be passing on this.
I just use a cheap very light laptop for backup when traveling.
It has 500g space, an SD card slot, wifi and I can see the images to give me confidence the back up has worked.
I can even a surf for a web site if I need to.
Problem solved: For many, that's not an option.
Carrying around a laptop on your back is annoying enough in many situations.
Not for what it does.
It can stream upto 8 streams of video.
It can stream 4K video.
It connects via WiFi to several online storage options including Adobe Creative Cloud syncing.
It may not be for every photographer, but solves numerous challenges for some photographers and videographers, I own the 1TB Samsung T5 external SSD, which is about the size of a credit card.
A great piece of technology!
It was done, and didn't go so well.
These are always going to be niche products.
I think the 1-2 TB models make more sense than the smaller ones despite the higher cost.
Say you want to go on a 2 week trip and don't want to bring a laptop or juggle a half-dozen SD cards.
And that you are taking a lot of video or otherwise actually need a that kind of storage.
It's a little far-fetched, but I can kinda see it.
For the smaller ones, you're right- it's cheaper and simpler just to buy another SD card.
I also think this is not intended to be a profitable product as such, but sort of prototype on the market that is pointing to where WD is heading.
The connecting of external drives and memory sticks on USB ports is starting to be a little too millennium.
Charging from the SSD actually makes sense in that context -- As long as one device in your SSD array has power, they all do.
Definitely the largest size, anything smaller would be a bit pointless.
There's some sticker shock, but not if you consider that can gift card slots can prices are similar to external SSDs from major manufacturers.
Plus, the My Passport includes its own wireless network, the ability to stream photos and videos, and a mobile app for managing content.
It's not perfect you can read my review of visit web page previous modelbut can definitely be useful under some circumstances.
In some parts of the world you can buy a house for that.
To me it makes more sense to use a cheap laptop.
I don't shoot video, so a lappy has enough capacity to store all the stills that I shoot on a 3 week shoot.
Much easier to view and manage images on a laptop.
I mean one that has some decent storage and at least enough power to download to in the field?
I do think drives like these look promising but I got a 256 GB iPad Pro with LTE and Lightroom CC.
Or perhaps you can drag that laptop out while shooting a 10 hour wedding - the bride's mother will love you.
When you go through airport security, taking the time to drag out your laptop and have it sniffed again and again - enjoyable for you?
G - I think he read the question just fine, I don't see anything in it that would dismiss what he's saying.
I also plan to travel on an upcoming trip with a 256GB iPad Pro.
However I'm also taking a WD WiFi Pro unit that has 4TB for photo backup, because for any kind of serious work there is no way you can back up enough onto something with only 256GB of storage and some of that is taken up by apps as well!
For a wedding photographer also they would burn through the iPad storage in an hour or less.
Plus any iPad is a lot larger than this drive, and much more breakable.
And to be honest, even using my USB 3.
I mean, at the maximum stated speed, you could transfer almost up to 4GB of pictures in about one minute.
Plus I usually have my laptop back at the hotel when traveling for backup anyways.
Write speeds are usually quite a bit slower.
SSDs are way faster at reading the data and especially finding the data on the drive than regular hard drives, but writing it to disk is another ballpark.
Stop wasting our time bringing out expensive, low gig, no screen storage.
I for one will not use anything that I cannot Confirm that my photos have been downloaded and work.
At present, screens must be incredibly cheap, a simple black-and-white confirmation screen to at least know your images are on the drive.
The better idea is to stick some kind of device like Apple has Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader that connects to your phone and you put in the film card and look at your photos to make that confirmation.
If SanDisk could add some kind of wired hook up to your phone, so that you can check your images and make that confirmation.
Most people have a phone, so that would be one way to get around a built-in screen.
All they would need is a couple of connectors on the outside the SSD drive.
The compatibility list is on the WD site.
Their app for iOS and Android can view all the supported formats.
The app, My Cloud, connects via WiFi to the drive and allows transfer to various cloud based options think DropBox and also Adobe Creative Cloud.
This allows me to transfer images to my 512MB iPad Pro, edit with Mobile Lightroom and sync photos via Adobe Creative Cloud back to my desktop.
I also shoot iPhone 4K video with my iPhone 7 and X and the integration with FiLMiC Pro backing up 4K footage wirelessly frees up a lot of storage space on my iPhones.
I do not visit web page for Western Digital or any subsidiary.
But you can confirm the download using the app if you have an iPhone or iPad with you.
It is very easy to do While a confirmation that the photos have copied OK is important, I don't think being able to visually check the images are there OK is that important.
Generally with RAW images the embedded JPEG card slot ssd be displayed, meaning the RAW data could be corrupted while the embedded JPEG still displays OK.
If an image is already corrupted on your memory card before copying, then being able to see the image on the backup is corrupted isn't that helpful, since there is nothing you can do about it.
Unless you have a chance to go back and shoot the same thing again.
Maybe an option would be useful that can do a binary compare after the copy completes, to ensure that everything copied is exactly the same as on the memory card.
But then this would probably double copy times.
If the file on your memory card was corrupted in the first place then this does not reflect on the quality of this item as a backup conduit A group test review of portable hard drives would be really interesting.
Reporting the news of new equipment is useful, but actual reviews of peripherals such as these hd's, printers, scanners etc.
Cheers Richard — We reviewed the previous two models of this product and.
If possible, we'll review this one as well.
I have a very hard time trusting this kind of tech where I cannot see a screen verification showing the contents of the drive to be sure all files were in fact backed up.
Finally one with an SD card slot built-in yes, I know they've existed for some time, but finally an SSD with a card slotand I guess the prices are reasonable I mean, they are about what you'd pay to make your own with a bare SSD and an enclosure, but you get an SD card slot with the WD.
Although, Android users can probably also just use their phones and an SD card reader to do the same job assuming they just click for source a microSD card slot and card in the phone.
Only in the same period, the compact flash cards became significantly cheaper and larger.
Which kind of defeated the purpose of the storage device to many potential buyers.
I still have my Delkin Picture Pad from 2002 or so.
Now, I don't want to get rid of it.
It's also a back up battery with wifi, that can power itself for 10 hours.
It's not just a SSD in a sock.
SD cards are impractical for multiple video files.
Clips can be spread over multiple cards and swapping cards can be frustrating and a big waste of time.

I'm thinking of buying a Lenovo X230 laptop. The SSDs they offer, however, max out at 128GB which is way too small for me. Since the X230 comes with an ExpressCard slot, however, I was thinking of ordering it with a 500GB HDD for my data and adding an ExpressCard SSD for my apps and OS (Win7 x64).

In such case your BIOS must be able to manage an option to boot from PCI-e slot on one hand, and the SSD's SATA/PATA built-in controller must report to the the PC's BIOS that it handles a bootable disk. Maybe this can only be checked once the SSD PCI-e card is inserted in the machine then recognized by the BIOS to be a boot option.

The full-height slot on the X220 is designed to acccomodate either a MiniPCIe or a mSATA card. I do not know whether the half-height slot will recognize a mSATA card. If you wish to use a mSATA SSD in your X220, you will need to remove the Ericsson GSM/GPS card. You could then use something like a 3G hotspot for connectivity.

I'm interested in getting an mSATA SSD in the WWAN slot in e7240. Apart from the LITEON SSD (which doesn't seem to be available in my location), what other SSDs can be used? If you are using an SSD in this slot, I would love to know the brand/model and any additional effort/issues you faced? Thanks.

It's a fast 6Gb/s SATA PCI Express adapter card that enables you to attach readily available 2.5" SSDs and install the assembly neatly into a single PCIe slot, no cables or drivers necessary. Unlike other PCI Express SSD cards that rely on proprietary, premium priced SSD modules, Tempo SSD uses standard 2.5" SATA drives that you choose.
